Action Verbs: Resume Gold!

by Sarah Wilkinson, Class of ’17

One thing is sure about resume writing: action verbs are the way to go. Action verbs are just what they sound like – verbs that describe an action. You use action verbs when writing your resume for maximum impact; it simply makes you seem more interesting and your accomplishments more impressive.

Some action verbs are stronger than others. When you’re listing all of the different bits of experience you’ve had for each job, for example, it’s better to use words like “I created” or “We collaborated.” These are action verbs that say far more than others like “I worked” or “We did.” Here’s an example of how you might list a job on your resume:

Sept. 2013 – May 2015   Champlain College Career Collaborative Social Media Associate  Burlington, VT

  • Collaborated with career coaches to expand social media presence onto multiple platforms
  • Expanded Twitter following by 50% in four months
  • Launched Career Blog for Spring 2015; wrote original content

I used action verbs like “Collaborated,” “Expanded,” and “Launched” that helps someone reading my resume understand what exactly I did in my role as social media associate. I used all past tense until the very last line because my role changed over time and not all of these tasks currently apply to what I’m doing. Using percentages, as I did in bullet number two gives specific information, which employers like, so use them wherever applicable.

As you write your own resume, here’s a list of action verbs you can use to help tell your story to potential employers. They are separated into different categories: accomplishments, communication skills, creative skills, financial/data skills, helping skills, leadership skills, organization skills, and research skills. For example, if you were listing skills you learned while working at a day care, you ‘d look in the “helping skills” category, and if you wanted to include information about a blog you just made, you might look in “accomplishments.”
